Batch Processing as a Transaction Tracking Option

by Linda Sibanda

There are different ways in which transactions or leads can be tracked through an affiliate marketing system, ranging from batch processing, pixel tracking, stats relay, mobile tracking and direct linking, all of which are supported at Share Results.

For now, let’s take a look at batch transaction processing (also know as batch filing) and pixel tracking options more closely.

Pixel tracking occurs when transactions or leads are recorded in real time. When an affiliate generates transactions or leads, data pertaining to this transaction is captured and the customer (site visitor) information is sent to the Share Results affiliate tracking system. This way activity is effectively tracked from the affiliate sites in real time.

In contrast, batch filing is not tracked in real time. With batch filing, merchants send their transaction files daily. The files are submitted at a scheduled time and are uploaded into the affiliate tracking system. Once uploaded, the affiliate program reflects the new data accordingly.

Batch filing allows the merchant to perform their own validation or post-sale processing operations before submitting the final data. This way the merchant only submits transactions they have fully reviewed and validated.

The data received from the merchant are uploaded and set up as pending transactions. The affiliate manager is then able to review and process the transactions in the affiliate system (updating the status accordingly). Merchants have an option to have the data set to automatic approval.

Batch filing and pixel tracking can be combined for bulk approval tracking.  In this process, sales are recorded once a pixel is fired at the transaction confirmation page and the sale is recorded as pending in the affiliate tracking system. The sales are approved and updated when the daily files are received through batch filing.

The affiliate tracking system is a tool which merchants use to track and measure data, giving a clear picture of the success of their affiliate marketing efforts. It is important to know the different affiliate marketing tracking options, and to choose the one that is most suited to your needs.
